Guangzhou

Guangzhou South: get to the right station and board with your passport

Chinese station names, metro connections and the checks between the entrance and your train.

Quick answer

Your departure station must say 广州南 — Guangzhou South. It is in Shibi, Panyu, south of central Guangzhou, and is a different place from Guangzhou Railway Station, East or Baiyun. Bring the original passport used to book. For a first visit, plan to reach the station about 90 minutes before departure.

Four names, four different stations

Match the departure name on your ticket. These are separate railway stations, not interchangeable stops.

Match the station, not just the city

Check the departure station on the paid booking, not just “Guangzhou” in the search results. Give your driver or map app the full Chinese name. The comparison below shows the main lookalikes.

A train ticket from Guangzhou South cannot be used to board at Guangzhou East just because both stations are in the same city. Fix a wrong destination as soon as you notice it.

Getting there

Metro: Guangzhou Metro Lines 2, 7 and 22, plus Foshan Metro Line 2, serve Guangzhou South. Pick the route from your accommodation using a current route planner.

Taxi or ride-hailing: set the destination to 广州南站 and tell the driver you are catching a train. Allow for traffic and the walk from the drop-off point.

The intercity service uses 番禺站 — Panyu Station — in the same hub. It is not the name to substitute on a mainline train booking; follow the signs for your ticketed service.

From entrance to train

  1. Follow Departures / 进站 signs. Show the original passport used in your booking and put your bags through security.
  2. If a gate cannot read your passport, show it to the staff beside the gate and ask for the manual channel / 人工通道.
  3. Find your train number on the departure board, then its gate / 检票口. Several trains can have the same destination.
  4. Wait near that gate, watch for boarding and follow your carriage and seat number. Keep your passport handy for boarding and exit checks.

How early is early enough?

Our planning advice for a newcomer is about 90 minutes at the station, with more time if you need a ticket-counter visit or are travelling during a holiday. TravelChinaGuide also advises at least 90 minutes, especially at busy times. This is a buffer, not an official boarding rule.

The station stops ticket checking before the train leaves. Read the cutoff for your train on the display; do not use the departure time as your target arrival time.

If you are late or at the wrong station

Open the paid order in 12306, or go to a staffed ticket counter with your passport and order number. Ask about changing the ticket before buying a second one. The related refund/change guide explains the timing rules.
