Guangzhou

Can you pay cash in Guangzhou?

Keep small RMB notes for shops, taxis and payment-app failures.

Quick answer

Yes—RMB cash is a useful backup for in-person purchases. Carry smaller notes so a lack of change does not stop a quick meal or taxi ride. Cash does not replace payment in every online booking or delivery app.

Get cash you can actually use

  1. At a bank or airport exchange counter, ask for some small notes rather than only RMB 100 notes. Check the exchange rate and any fee first.
  2. For an ATM, check for your card-network logo and read the withdrawal fee. Your bank may charge its own fee.
  3. Keep some cash separately from your phone so losing one does not leave you unable to pay.

At a shop or in a taxi

If cash is your only option, ask before ordering or setting off. Show the note and ask whether change is available.

If they cannot make change, offer a smaller note or another payment method. Count the change and keep a receipt for larger purchases.

If a business refuses cash

Save the business name, Chinese address, time and what staff said. In Guangzhou, call 12345 to ask how to report or resolve the service issue. For language help with that call, try 960169. Keep the immediate purchase separate from the complaint if you have another way to pay.
